Developing and maintaining supportive, an intimate relationship is a critical aspect of life. While it is a hope and expectation that all of our relationships are supportive, rewarding, and fulfilling, overtime these important aspects of a relationship may begin to fade. Relationship difficulties and challenges are a typical part of sharing life with others, and the way we deal with these challenges impacts our relationships. Sometimes, couples can manage their challenges on their own, through open communication and understanding. Other times, couples may feel unsure and require additional support to help improve their circumstances.
Couples counselling is a process to facilitate communication about desires and concerns, and develop trust, acknowledgement and the strength to make the necessary changes. It is an opportunity for mutual growth, whereby couples can build respect, fairness and cooperation with one another. Often, it can also provide the opportunity to review the expectations that couples have of themselves, each other and the relationship as a whole.
At The Avenue Place, our experienced psychologists help couples negotiate many common obstacles that can lead to decreased relationship satisfaction. These include communication difficulties, unresolved anger and arguments, infidelity and other betrayals, financial conflicts, trust and/or intimacy issues, sexual difficulties, differences in parenting styles, conflicts in combined families and lack of emotional closeness. Using our knowledge and experience in these areas, we can provide couples with the specific tools needed to not only reduce conflict but work towards building a healthier and happier relationship – long after counselling has ended.
